About

In a professional field driven by government institutions, Rodney Boyd is highly respected for his expertise and contributions. Throughout his illustrious career, Rodney has cut a wide swath across every level of state and local government, establishing himself as the preeminent go-to leader at the crossroads of government affairs, law, and public policy. Known for his ability to employ his legal expertise to shape legislative outcomes and navigate complex regulatory landscapes, he leverages his unparalleled business acumen and deep-rooted relationships within government, business, and community sectors to help clients achieve their objectives. As a founding partner of Nexus Group, Rodney continues to set the standard for the best government relations in the state of Missouri.

Enterprising even as a young man, Rodney’s first exposure to the power structures of local and state government came at the House of Good Care shoeshine parlor in downtown St. Louis, where he worked from age 8 until he was 16. Looking back, he compares the experience to providing him with a PhD on how government—and by extension life—works. Throughout the 70s and 80s, men from all walks came through the shoeshine parlor—lawyers, elected officials, pastors, businessmen—and as they talked freely amongst each other, young Rodney took it all in and it shaped the path he would lay out for himself as an adult. He saw that by becoming a lawyer and working in government, he could be an agent of change. In the years since, he’s done just that.

After working in the Missouri legislature and earning his law degree, Rodney clerked for the Missouri Supreme Court, and then he became the staff lobbyist for St. Louis Mayor Clarence Harmon’s administration. That intersection between lobbying and providing expert counsel through the lens of his legal training was where Rodney found his real calling. He brokered an agreement to lobby for the City of St. Louis as an independent contractor, thereby marking the birth of Rodney’s entrepreneurial endeavors.

Soon he was courted by some of the most prestigious law firms in the country. With senior roles at both Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal, LLP, which is now Dentons US, LLP, Rodney further honed his legal and lobbying skills, grew his sphere of influence, and engineered countless high-profile client victories before embracing his entrepreneurial spirit once again and co-founding Nexus Group in 2018. His expertise spans multiple industries, including healthcare, education, transportation, energy, and real estate. Rodney’s keen strategic insight and ability to build consensus among stakeholders make him one of the best lobbyists in Missouri, positioning him as a powerful advocate in shaping public policy outcomes.

In addition to his role at Nexus Group, Rodney is actively involved in community development initiatives and has been recognized for his contributions to economic growth and civic engagement. His commitment to fostering meaningful connections between government entities and private sector organizations underscores his dedication to advancing policies that promote innovation, equity, and sustainable growth.

Rodney lives in St. Louis with his wife, and they have three children.

FAQs

How does your experience as an attorney influence your work?

I am able to navigate the intersection of law, policy, and government affairs. My first-hand knowledge of the legislative and regulatory frameworks allows me to analyze complex legal issues, anticipate policy changes, and develop strategies that align with both legal requirements and business objectives. As an attorney, I ensure that advocacy efforts remain compliant with applicable laws while maximizing opportunities for clients in legislative and regulatory arenas. This expertise enables me to interpret and apply legal insights to strengthen Nexus Group’s approach to public policy and strategic consulting.

My background as both an attorney and a former prosecutor for the City of St. Louis provides Nexus Group with a distinctive advantage in government affairs and policy advocacy. My experience allows me to analyze complex regulatory frameworks and craft strategic solutions for clients navigating legislative challenges. I’ve been intimately involved in government operations and judicial processes, which equips me with a deep understanding of policy development, enforcement mechanisms, and stakeholder negotiations. This combination of knowledge helps me be a highly effective advocate, helping clients achieve their objectives while mitigating legal and regulatory risks.

Growing up, I worked at a popular shoeshine parlor in St. Louis where the city’s Black elite gathered to swap stories and conduct business. That experience taught me the value of connection and community. Later, while interning for the entire Black Caucus, I gained a deeper appreciation for how policy and legislation can shape opportunities for minority-owned businesses. As a founder of Nexus Group, Missouri’s only MBE-certified government affairs firm, I help businesses maximize their MBE status, navigate contracts, and leverage networking opportunities to boost visibility and secure long-term success.
